Title: Two Dark Reigns
Author: Kendare Blake
Series Status: 4th installment in the Three Dark Crowns series
Page Count: 464
Rating: 4.5/5 stars
Synopsis: Queen Katharine has waited her entire life to wear the crown. But now that she finally has it, the murmurs of dissent grow louder by the day. There’s also the alarming issue of whether or not her sisters are actually dead—or if they’re waiting in the wings to usurp the throne.
Mirabella and Arsinoe are alive, but in hiding on the mainland and dealing with a nightmare of their own: being visited repeatedly by a specter they think might be the fabled Blue Queen. Though she says nothing, her rotting, bony finger pointing out to sea is clear enough: return to Fennbirn.
Jules, too, is in a strange place—in disguise. And her only confidants, a war-gifted girl named Emilia and her oracle friend Mathilde, are urging her to take on a role she can’t imagine filling: a legion-cursed queen who will lead a rebel army to Katharine’s doorstep.
This is an uprising that the mysterious Blue Queen may have more to do with than anyone could have guessed—or expected.
Review: This review does contain spoilers for the first two books in the series, Three Dark Crowns, and One Dark Throne.
This was one of my most anticipated releases of the year, and it did not disappoint me. This series is such a fun read that leaves you laughing the whole way throughout it. I originally thought this series was going to be a duology, but then the third was released and I thought it to be a trilogy. Evidently, though, this is now a four book series. I have mixed feelings about this but let’s move on.
The plot of this book is so steady and just keeps going, with the help of the characters. The characters are the very essence of this story, and what makes it so much better. Mirabella, the ever-protective older sister, Katharine, the littlest sister who is undead and terrifying, and Arsinoe, the middle sister who loves fiercely and fights for those she loves eve fiercer.
The story picks up from the last one with Arsinoe, Mirabella, and Billy making it out of Fennbirn and onto the Mainland, abdicating the throne and their duties as Queens. Jules sails back to Fennbirn after finding out she is legion cursed and is both the most powerful naturalist and warrior to walk Fennbirn in centuries. Joseph is dead, Billy is charming as ever.
I found Jules to be very annoying throughout this whole book. Usually, Arsinoe and Jules were my two favorites, but as Jules grew into the idea of the “Legion Queen”, it was as if her ego grew with it. Far too big an ego for a tiny person and I should know, I walk that line.
My favourite parts of this book were Billy and Peityr because they were just so amusing the entire time. Billy is so down to earth and in love with Arsinoe. Peityr is the exact opposite, but is so in love with Kat, despite pushing her into the Brecca Domain before. Oops.
I am still not quite sure what to make of the ending, but I eagerly await the next addition to the series! I have wondered what the title will be, so feel free to comment below any ideas or theories you might have!
I give this book 4.5/5 stars and would highly recommend it to fans of high and dark fantasy.
